Drive-by shooting shakes Atlanta high school sommunity

At least four students were wounded in a drive-by shooting at the Benjamin E. Mays High School in Atlanta on Wednesday. 

The gunfire incident took place in the lower campus parking lot shortly after dismissal. Injuries to the students were not life-threatening, according to Atlanta Public Schools.

The incident, which occurred as students were leaving the premises, raised immediate concerns about the safety of the school environment. The Atlanta Public Schools Police Department and Atlanta Fire Rescue were swift to respond, transporting the injured students to the hospital.

In a statement, the school district said, “The safety and security of our students and staff are paramount.” All after-school activities were promptly canceled, and an ongoing investigation is being led by the school district’s police department.

This unfortunate incident follows a similar event in May, where a 16-year-old lost their life in a shooting near the school campus. However, the previous incident took place during non-school hours, at around 2:30am, described as an unauthorised gathering near a school driveway.

The latest drive-by shooting has reignited concerns about the safety measures in place for students during crucial moments like dismissal. The Atlanta community is grappling with questions about the efficacy of existing security protocols and what steps can be taken to enhance the protection of students.
